BOB MCDONNELL'S "FREE LUNCH" SOLUTION TO STATE'S TRAFFIC PROBLEMS
McDonnell Calls on General Assembly to Block Progress and Continue Gridlock
RICHMOND - On the day the General Assembly is set to convene a special session to debate the Governor's transportation proposal, Attorney General Bob McDonnell's answer is to offer a so-called "free lunch" to the people of Virginia at a rally at the State Capitol. But the real cost is more gridlock on the road to solving Virginia's transportation crisis.
The event is being called a "Rally at the Capitol Monday & Free Lunch with Attorney General Bob McDonnell", according to an e-mail sent Friday afternoon by Americans for Prosperity. During the event, we expect him to once again confirm his opposition to solving our transportation crisis and his belief that Virginians should remain stuck on traffic-clogged roads and unsafe bridges.
"Bob McDonnell has already shown us he'd rather rally against progress and block solutions to our transportation crisis than help us fix it," said Democratic Party of Virginia Executive Director Levar Stoney. "So what's he going to do today? Will he finally offer some ideas for solving to the state's transportation problems? Or will he use this free lunch to try and distract voters from the issue?"
Gov. Kaine and other Democrats are offering transportation ideas to relieve traffic congestion and fund our statewide maintenance deficits. The House Republican Caucus can choose to either follow McDonnell's failed leadership, or they can step forward and create a bipartisan effort to solve the problem.
McDonnell himself has acknowledged that he has no "particular plan or vision" for how we meet the state's transportation needs. [Richmond Times-Dispatch, 3/26/08]
A few weeks ago, the Virginian Pilot Editorial Board recognized that "no serious candidate for governor would trash someone else's proposal for fixing the state's most pressing need unless he had a better idea in mind."
The Democratic Party of Virginia is urging McDonnell and his fellow Republicans to step up and finally put progress over partisanship.
