~ U.S. Senate candidate offers 'portfolio approach' to address U.S. energy challenges ~
ALEXANDRIA, Va.-- U.S. Senate candidate Mark R. Warner will begin broadcasting a television advertisement this week that highlights his proposals to responsibly address the economic and national security challenges posed by America’s energy crisis. The 30-second commercial, which can be viewed at here, will begin airing in the Hampton Roads, Richmond, Harrisonburg, Roanoke and Bristol TV markets today.
Governor Warner’s plan, unveiled early last month, was described as “An Energy Plan Powered by Ideas” by the Roanoke Times [June 20, 2008]. The Warner energy plan includes:
• accelerated research and development of clean, renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, nuclear, bio-fuels, clean coal, plug-in hybrids and next-generation vehicle battery technology;
• making permanent the R&D tax credit for renewable energy;
• expanded domestic refining capacity, which hasn’t increased in almost 30 years;
• expand oil and gas production, including support for bipartisan legislation introduced by U.S. Senators John Warner and Jim Webb that would lift the federal moratorium on offshore exploration for domestic energy supplies;
• regulatory tools designed to discourage speculation in the oil markets.
• promotion of higher U.S. vehicle mileage standards;
• renewal of federal tax incentives to encourage more people to purchase higher-mileage plug-in and hybrid vehicles;
• increased energy conservation, and applying the power of information technology to monitor and regulate electric power usage;
• and a renewed promotion of flex-time work schedules and telecommuting in the public and private sectors, which will increase workplace productivity while allowing more workers to avoid costly daily commutes.
“If Virginians give me an opportunity to represent them in the U.S. Senate, I will work in a bipartisan way to enact a balanced 'portfolio approach' that simultaneously tackles our country’s energy crisis on several fronts, and will decrease our dependence on foreign oil,” Governor Warner said
In 2005, TIME Magazine named Mark Warner one of “America’s Five Best Governors.” The same year, Governing magazine designated Virginia as the nation’s “Best Managed State.” And in 2006, after separate and independent reviews, the influential business magazine Forbes and the CNBC financial network both concluded that Virginia was the nation’s “Best State for Business.”View all Hampton Roads posts.
