Hello from Southwest Virginia!

Hello All,

This is Brian Phillips, the DNC Regional Organizer for Southwestern Virginia. Readers for whom this is the first opportunity you have had to meet me, (albeit in a virtual setting) my only regret is that this introduction is not face to face, rather monitor to monitor.

Other than my love for my family - my wife and two incredible boys, I have found no greater passion in life than my passion for politics, more specifically - dedicating my career to the proposition that our nation's greatest years are ahead of us, not behind us. The unspoken, understood commitment to this proposition is a personal willingness to work tirelessly, with little regard to personal reward or accolade to ensure my children and grandchildren will have even greater opportunities for success here in Southwestern Virginia.

The position of DNC Regional Organizer for Southwestern Virginia was nearly a perfect fit for me, having been involved, in one manner or another, in politics since I was seven years old - following my grandfather to local Democratic Committee meetings in Montgomery County, VA. As a teenager, I spent many hours stuffing envelopes, knocking on doors, making calls, assisting at events - basically every aspect of grassroots campaigning. My willingness and commitment to perform any of these tasks remains unchanged. I have stated numerous times to various committees throughout Southwestern Virginia that my title does not entitle me or grant me some special privilege to simply look over their shoulders to ensure the grassroots work is being accomplished. I prefer to help add volunteers to their ranks and then stand shoulder to shoulder with them as they campaign.

I have met so many incredible leaders, future leaders and influential people since starting this career. Without a doubt, however, the most incredible aspect of my position has been the numerous friendships I continue to make on a daily basis throughout Southwestern Virginia. Through this forum, one of my strongest desires is to be able to share with you some of the stories, the grassroots activists, important event dates and campaign grass roots activities within which party activists and netroots activists alike may directly participate. Finally, in sharing my stories with you, I hope to be able provide a glimpse of Southwestern Virginia to the reader - an area I have always called home.

I will apologize in advance for the anticipated length of my entries as brevity has never been one of my strongest attributes. Finally, I look forward to interacting with you and engaging you in the process of democracy.
