EDITORIAL HIGHLIGHTS
"Regarding the economy, Gilmore is remembered, fairly or not, for the budget breakdowns whose consequences included the election of . . . Mark Warner. The grassroots still appreciate Gilmore's reduction of the so-called car tax. Others consider the cut an example of bad policy made worse by incompetent delivery. Warner left the governor's office with strong approval ratings, earned in part by his administration's reputation for efficent management. Gilmore is seen as the more polarizing figure." [Richmond Times-Dispatch, 5/6/08]
"And why are the House Republicans opposed to any statewide tax increase - gasoline or other? It's because they have put their partisan ideology ahead of the best interests of the entire state. As the Virginian Pilot in Norfolk reported recently, Dels. Glenn Oder, R-Newport News, and John Cosgrove, R-Chesapeake, confirmed as much. Both said Republicans who seek higher taxes can expect to be targeted for defeat by fellow Republicans who will finance opposition to have them voted out of office. So the party really is more important to those Republicans than the state. That's pathetic." [Lynchburg News & Advance, 5/7/08]
"Although Gov. Timothy M. Kaine did not get all the money he proposed to the 2008 General Assembly to expand early childhood education across Virginia, he did get money to nurture early-learning programs around the state. And that program has become an active one, leading to pilot projects that show cooperation and intense commitment to provide quality early childhood education in public and private preschools. [Lynchburg News & Advance, 5/8/08]
"Earlier this week, Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced the creation of his own YouTube site as part of the Commonwealth's community of channels... We are impressed with the Commonwealth's commitment to stay ahead of the curve in this new age of technology, and encourage our Southwest Virginia counties to become involved in Virginia's YouTube community." [Bluefield Daily Telegraph, 5/8/08]
