Register for the 2008 Democratic State Convention
--------------------
INTRODUCTION
The main story in Richmond this week was the return of the General Assembly for a lengthy veto session on Wednesday. You can find recaps on all the legislative action from our House and Senate caucuses at www.assemblyaccess.com and www.vasenatedems.com.
In other news, if you're interested in being a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Denver, don't forget to check your congressional district's prefiling deadline. The dates can be found on our website, or you can always contact our office at (804) 644-1966.
Best,
Levar Stoney
Executive Director

EDITORIAL HIGHLIGHTS
"'Virginia is for veterans' might be the commonwealth's new slogan. Virginia's elected representatives are leading the charge to update the GI Bill to meet the higher-education needs of veterans returning from duty on the war fronts of Afghanistan and Iraq. The proposal still needs a thorough review, but theirs is a good-faith attempt to reward the sacrifices made by an all-volunteer military that has almost uniformly endured unduly extended tours of duty in a war zone." [Daily Press, 4/19/08]
"Another Senate wannabe, Jim Gilmore, cast a pall over what was intended to be a light-hearted picnic when he used his time at the podium to launch a surface-to-air missile attack against Warner. No one was expecting a stand-up comedy routine from the mirthless former governor, but was it necessary to channel the Terminator seven months out from Election Day?" [Virginian-Pilot, 4/19/08]
"GOP Senate hopeful Jim Gilmore didn't get the no-slash-and-burn memo and decided to treat the crowd of about 3,000 Virginians to the same kind of blistering rhetoric he might offer to a nominating crowd at a Republican convention." [Bob Gibson, Daily Progress, 4/19/08]
"[I]t's worth remembering that in June 2002, six months after Gilmore left office, VDOT was obliged to eliminate 166 construction projects previously announced. The 'free' approach to road funding went in the ditch called reality." [Daily Press, 4/24/08]
